Patriots' Herald publisher Al Pryor exits, declaring «no sweet of» his brow

In a message to a local business yesterday, November 26, Patriots' Herald publisher Al Pryor disclosed his departure from the newspaper. Following the cancellation of advertising in the Patriots' Herald by yet another local business, Pryor wrote «. . . as of today I am no longer part of the Patriot so no sweet of [sic] my brow.»

Pryor's recent editorial blaming the «gay community» for his paper's financial woes--and published against the advice of his own board of directors--may have been his parting shot at gay citizens and their allies and his swan song. And, possibly, the Patriot's last gasp.

Earlier in the month, Pryor had rejected a paid advertisement for Diversity Weekend, claiming it was incompatible with the «family values» of the Patriots' Herald. «With the gays up in arms against us because we would not run the diversity weekend ad,» Pryor sweepingly generalized, «they threaten to stop all business transactions with businesses that do run ads with us.»

A show with afterglow

The 3rd annual Eureka Springs Fall Art Fair this past weekend was a success on many levels. Due to great attendance, good sales, combined with the enjoyment of a fun social event, artists were well pleased with the final results. An exhibit of such scale takes weeks, even months, of prep work by both the artists and the producer Steve Schmidt and his able team.

The cold weather seemed to draw folks indoors and the chill in the air enhanced the holiday buying atmosphere. Many locals showed up to support the town's artists and were joined by visitors from as far away as California and Hawaii. When local art is purchased by out of state tourists it extends the reputation of Eureka Springs as an art colony.

Be a Jericho Rider! (no motorcycle required)

We didn't want to miss yesterday's «Christian Perspective» program on KTCN 100.9 FM because it featured an interview with Eureka's own local Jericho Rider, Kevin B. Thompson.

Thompson announced his appearance on the Jericho Rider's forum with the comment, «I am asking that you please pray for me, though I know that Jesus is with me, my flesh still wants to be nervous.» So, before we move briskly along to the sort of commentary that makes the Baby Jesus cry, a brief pause for this supportive message:

[Kevin, you have a very nice radio voice and you did just fine. See? You even had a fan call from the earnest listener who called in to play, «Stump the Pastor» with his obscure Bible question.]

A different kind of lighting ceremony

It's a late summer evening in the Valentine section of Kansas City. I'm walking to the apartment I lived in back then, admiring the old, large homes in this part of town. Some of them were turned into apartments in the 60's, and now a lot of younger people are moving in, gentrifying the neighborhood; turning these large beautiful homes back into single family dwellings. One in particular I've always admired is just a block from my apartment. It sits on a corner, with a wrought iron fence about 5 feet tall surrounding the yard. A large, 2 story home that looks like it's been well cared for over the years and probably not divided into apartments. I have no idea what the architecture is, but it's a great looking house.

As I get a little closer, I see a woman in the front yard, next to the house. She's at one of the windows. There's another woman in the house, leaning out the window. At first I think they're just talking. Then I realize, the woman in the house is crawling out of the window, the woman outside is helping her. What the hell? Looking around, I see no signs of a fire, so why is she crawling out the window? Wouldn't it be easier to use the door as an exit? I'm about even with them now, from the sidewalk I yell at them, «Is everything ok? Do you need some help?»

«Yes. I think so.» says the woman in the yard. I walk through the gate, up to the window. The woman in the yard appears to be in her early to mid thirties, the woman in the window is elderly, and quite frail.

Faith based business

In last week's article entitled, «To Boycott or Not? Fundies Flip and Flop,» we told you about «traditional family values» newspaper publisher Al Pryor blaming the Eureka Springs gay community for his publication's potentially dire financial staits.

We'd like nothing better than to give you a link to Al's Galton's whistle wisdom in its entirety, but we suspect Al's opening sentence, «I write this against the advice of my board of directors,» had something to do with the fact that Al's editorial has been removed from the Patriots' Herald web site.

Briefly, Al refused to accept an ad promoting Eureka's Fall Diversity Weekend. A local skirmish ensued, wherein citizens and visitors vowed to boycott the Patriots' Herald and its advertisers. Al fired back with a bang, and a whimper, complaining--and we're quoting directly from our print version of the web-excised editorial:
