Cut! Bring in the stunt Christians
The propagandist never asks «Why?» He needs no justification, but rather only this granite faith. -- August Eigruber
In tonight's episode of Al Watch, we discover that the American Family Association, the radical, right wing organization that, called for a nationwide boycott of Eureka Springs, is making a documentary about our fair city.
As Disciple Jean Merritt explains in the Patriots' Herald,
Jeff Johnson, producer and reporter for the organization based in Tupelo, Miss., said they became interested in Eureka Springs when they were contacted by many of their constituents when news of the Domestic Partnership Registry (DPR) came out. He explained they are a news service separate from the activist division of the American Family Association, and just want to tell the story of what happened. He said the truth needs to be told and let the people make an informed choice.
Merritt further explains the AFA's idea of an «informed choice» as an opportunity for people to to view, «a plea not to abandon Eureka Springs, and not to let the Passion Play die as punishment for what the city council has done.»
Here at Gay News, we've been watching this story develop on the AFA «news» division bulletin board, where Rev. Al pleads:
It is being looked at from a state level on the legality also. Please give us time to handle this. Before all this happened the area was hurting badly. If Christians tourist [sic] pull back it will destroy many Christian families and businesses.
What can we say, folks? As we pointed out in our July article about the requested boycott, you don't have to be the brightest sheep in the flock to realize that demanding a nationwide conservative Christian boycott isn't the best possible business plan for encouraging conservative Christian tourism.
Let us get this straight (if you'll forgive the term)--you've decided to recover from this faux pas by making a movie about how carefully selected local business owners are terrified of an AFA boycott?
In Disciple Merrit's words:
The AFA had called for a boycott of Eureka Springs because of the DPR, and business owners are afraid that could have a negative economic effect on the city. Based on the number of emails the mayor and others at first received after the call for the boycott, that could be a well-founded fear.
Surely consistency is a virtue and, if nothing else Rev. Al, you sure are consistent. So we will leave you to your holy and righteous quest to burn the village in order to save it.
We hope the Passion Play appreciates your assistance with their marketing plan, Rev. Al. Frankly? If our business had been crashing and burning for several years before the DPR, we might be grateful to have a scapegoat too.
We'll never know. Because, here at Gay News, we're too busy to micromanage the Evangelical Christian Lifestyle. So we'll just have to assume you know what you're doing and, seriously, thank you for doing it so well.
