If you ever wanted to see what goes on in the studio of an artist, your opportunity to do so can happen during the Annual Artists Studio Tour. For three days, September 28th, 29th, and 30th, twenty-one Eureka Springs’ artists will open their studios to the public. They will discuss their work, conduct demonstrations, and have wonderful art available for purchase each day from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
The event is a free, self-guided tour that will allow attendees to explore the creative processes involved in making fine art from its place of origin. See works in progress in a wide array of styles and mediums from jewelry, pottery, weaving, to painting.
One of several artists showing at the Art Colony on North Main is Jack Miller.
Miller is a painter and print maker who relocated to the area from New Orleans after being displaced by Katrina. His images range from scenes of the French Quarter to his new series depicting the classic Volkswagen bug.
A founding member of the colony, Jack houses his printing equipment at this site where he will explain the process involved in making intaglio prints.
To get a peek inside home based studios one can visit Denise Ryan at 9 Elk Street or Kathryn Semolic at 5 Hayes.
San Antonio native Semolic and Ryan from Philadlphia deservedly share the label, “accomplished artist.” Although they utilize very different styles, they also share a fondness for still life objects that are very well defined through an obvious studied use of color.

The downtown and up the stairs studio of Mel Shipley will showcase his intricately detailed bronzes enriched with fine patinas.
Shipley will share information on sculpting using the ancient lost wax method of casting. The process is painstakingly involved with breathtaking results.
Tour visitors will appreciate Mel’s rendering of the classic human form readily evident in his work.
Information about all the participating artists and a tour map can be found by visiting www.eurekaspringsstudiotour.com.
A preview reception will take place in the Carnegie Public Library Annex, 194 Spring, Thursday, September 27th, 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The reception will be an excellent time to meet all the artists and put favorites on the “don’t miss this one” list.
For many of the participating artists this will be the first time they have revealed this part of their creative lives and spaces for all to see. Jasper Johns once said, “For an artist to show his work in public is just like him dropping his pants.” To show art in one’s workspace is that and more. Don’t miss this splendid exposé.
